Hope for “El Borjita”: Building Homes and church
To reach lives and transform communities through effective service and compassionate care from the church
On November 6, Hurricane Rafael, a Category 3 storm, impacted the western region of Cuba. The province of Artemisa was one of the most severely affected, with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour, causing extensive damage. Among the hardest-hit areas was a small rural town, El Borjita, located in the Artemisa province, where an Alliance Church is situated. The community, predominantly comprised of individuals who emigrated from Eastern Cuba in search of better living conditions, has suffered significant destruction. Most of the homes in this community were severely damaged, including 13 houses that experienced partial collapses and the loss of their roofs.
Objectives:
-
Reconstruct 13 homes in the El Borjita community for vulnerable individuals. These homes include residences of both believers and non-believers.
-
Equip the homes with essential items that were damaged by the hurricane and some that the residents, in their poverty, cannot afford to replace.
-
Reconstruct a church that were partially damaged. One church in the El Borjita community.

Key Actions:
-
Send a container of construction materials and necessary supplies from Cuba.
-
Establish a technical team for project design and supervision, along with skilled workers for the reconstruction. Additionally, a project director and an assistant accountant will be appointed.
-
Acquire locally available materials as well as those that cannot be sent from abroad.
-
Deploy short-term mission groups from the United States to work on the project.

Budget:
This budget has been prepared considering the possibility of purchasing construction materials locally in Cuba.
-
Cost per house: $1,675.00
-
Total Cost for 13 houses: $21,762.00
-
Cost for church: $2,074.

Challenges:
The project has faced significant difficulty in being executed due to the shortage of construction materials in Cuba, particularly wood. The efforts made to obtain the materials would triple their original cost.
Efforts are being made to overcome this challenge by sending a container with construction materials from the United States in June 2025.

Execution Timeline:
The project is planned to be completed in 6 weeks with all materials on-site.
Initially, it was planned for this project to start in January 2025; however, due to the shortage of materials in Cuba and the high prices, it has not been able to commence. By sending a container with construction materials, the project is expected to begin in the summer of 2025.

Conclusion:
This project represents a vital step toward restoring dignity and safety to those who have suffered significant losses due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Rafael. It effectively demonstrates God's love in action. Through the collaborative efforts of both local and international partners, the project aims to provide immediate relief while fostering long-term transformation for affected families and the Borjita community.
